The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) is dedicated to the development and maintenance of standards for the practice of business analysis, and for the certification and recognition of practitioners. They are the first organization to offer formal business analyst certification.
Earning an IIBA® professional certification offers many benefits to both the individual and the organization employing or engaging them.
Certification of Competency in Business AnalysisTM (CCBA®)
The Certification of Competency in Business AnalysisTM (CCBA®) designation is a professional certification for business analysis practitioners who want to be recognized for their expertise and skills by earning formal recognition. With at least 3750 hours of hands-on business analysis experience, they have developed essential BA skills.
CCBA® recipients are recognized for the investment they have already made in their business analysis careers, and include professionals working in the role of:
- Business analysis
- Systems analysis
- Requirements analysis or management
- Process improvement
- Consulting
To apply for the Certification of Competency in Business Analysise exam and earn the CCBA® designation, a business analyst will need to be knowledgeable in all six knowledge areas of A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) knowledge areas, with proficiency in at least two. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum 3750 hours of business analysis work experience aligned with the BABOK® Guide in the last seven years
- Minimum 900 hours in two of the six knowledge areas or 500 hours in four of the six knowledge areas
- Minimum 21 hours of Professional Development in the past four years
- Minimum high school education or equivalent
- Two references from a career manager, client or Certified Business Analysis ProfessionalTM (CBAP®) recipient
- Signed Code of Conduct

Certified Business Analysis ProfessionalTM (CBAP®)
The Certified Business Analysis ProfessionalTM (CBAP®) designation is a professional certification for individuals with extensive business analysis experience. With at least 7500 hours of hands-on BA experience, CBAP® recipients are the elite, senior members of the BA community.
With over 1000 individuals in more than 30 countries achieving the CBAP® designation since the first Certified Business Analysis exam was held in November 2006, CBAP® recipients are experts in identifying the business needs of an organization in order to determine the best solutions. More and more companies are recognizing the CBAP® designation and the value and expertise these professionals bring to their organizations.
You will want to consider the many professional benefits of earning the CBAP® certification if you have an advanced level of knowledge and experience and are working in any of the following roles:
- Business analysis
- Systems analysis
- Requirements analysis or management
- Process improvement
- Consulting
To earn the CBAP® certification, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum 7500 hours of BA work experience aligned with A Guide to the Business Analysis Book of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) in the last 10 years
- Minimum 900 hours in four of the six knowledge areas
- Minimum 21 hours of Professional Development in the past four years
- Two references from a career manager, client or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) recipient
- Signed Code of Conduct

If you don’t meet the requirements for the CBAP® certification, you may want to consider applying for the CCBA® certification.
Testing
Individuals interested in taking either the CCBA®or CBAP® exam must first complete and submit the respective application with payment and be approved - this is the initial screening process for IIBA designations. Once an application is approved and the applicant has paid the exam fee to IIBA, the applicant is eligible to take the exam. The eligible exam candidate will then receive an email notification to register online for the exam.
To take your exam after December 31, 2012:
- View the list of CBT Locations offered through Prometric at www.prometric.com/iiba.
- After one business day of IIBA processing your exam fee payment, you can register to take your exam with Prometric at www.prometric.com/iiba.
When registering your exam date, you will need to enter your Eligibility ID. To find out what your Eligibility ID is, login to the My Profile section of the IIBA website at www.iiba.org. Enter your username and password as requested. Your Eligibility ID is your ID that is listed under the Personal Information section of your IIBA profile. For IIBA members, it is also the same ID as your IIBA membership ID number.
- To cancel and/or reschedule your exam date via Prometric’s online registration system, select the Reschedule/Cancel button and note the following:
- If you cancel 30 or more days before your exam date, there is no charge to you.
- If you cancel 5-29 days prior to your exam date, you will be required to pay Prometric a $50 USD cancellation/rescheduling fee.
- If you cancel less than five days before your exam date or, you fail to appear for a scheduled test or, you present yourself more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time for taking the test and you are refused admission, you will forfeit the exam fee you paid (i.e., $325 or $450 USD). In addition, you will have to pay the full exam fee to IIBA to reschedule.
